With cosmetic professionals under fire for lax regulations and safety for its administrators, California governor Jerry Brown signed a law to beef up supervision in medi-spas. The effort is to reduce the amount of untrained employees that are performing the procedures.

New Legislation Will Impact California Medi-Spas

Bakersfield Now published the story on the new legislation, adding to regulations that were already on the books for medi-spas. They did not cover safety for all procedures nor being done under the watch of a certified physician. This is the first such law put in place by the governor after years of efforts by California politicians.

A California cosmetic physician interviewed by Fox40 said that some medi-spas had problems because there were no doctors on staff when problems occurred, “and it’s happened quite a bit.”

Medi-spas caught breaking the rules could be fined up to $50,000 when the law goes into effect January 1, 2013. Doctors affiliated with the practices that do not monitor treatment, talk with patients, or administer procedures could face legal consequences.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery cautions patients to talk with a board-certified surgeon that is associated with an accredited clinic and hospital. They also state that patients unsure of the safety of the facility should express their fears and seek another doctor.
