Cosmetic Surgery Boom Causes Boon In Medi-Spa Industry

Luxurious settings, relaxing music and feeling pampered: why not have a Botox injection or eyelash extensions on top of it? Such is the life for customers of South Florida medical spas, eager to have a physical touch-up while living the life of lavishness.

The Miami Herald published a story on med spas offering surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic treatments for female and male customers. Places like Venus Mini Med Spa offering facial fillers in high-traffic malls and a dental spa in Fort Lauderdale giving out champagne and appetizers while you get Botox are examples of the concerted marketing effort to appeal to more consumers.

Medi Spas On the Rise in Florida

Medical professionals in numerous practices (dermatologists, surgeons, dentists, gynecologists) are flocking to the budding plastic surgery industry. And customers are coming in droves. The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASPAS) says that cosmetic procedures are up 197% since 1997—with surgical operations up 73% and nonsurgical treatments (facial fillers, laser hair procedures) increasing 356% in that time frame. American consumers spent in excess of $10 billion on cosmetic treatments in 2011 according to the ASPAS.

The story comes on the heels of Britain’s National Health Service calling for an investigation into plastic surgery operations. Dr. Leo McCaffery, president of ASAPS and a plastic surgeon, compares the rush of medical specialists to cosmetic surgery to the “Wild West.” He says that not all med spas are bad, “but it certainly behooves the consumer to do due diligence.”

With the majority of procedures done by people ages 35-50 (43%) and 28% by those ages 51-64, the market is being influenced by people averse to aging. Dr. Stephen Baker, a plastic surgeon and Coral Gables spokesman for American Society of Plastic Surgeons, makes the connection between the clientele surge and increased supply—as “when demand increases, supply increases.”
